10 Best Food Spots in Detroit

I wanted to start off by talking you guys about what I love doing most, and it’s a combo of what this blog is all about: getting dressed up & going out to a yummy restaurant with my friends or throwing on my favorite pair of Nikes and getting dessert! Detroit is a great up-and-coming city and has new restaurants and coffee shops opening on every block. Whether you live in a big city like Detroit, or anywhere else, I know how overwhelming it can be to pick a place to eat, especially when you’re hangry. So here is a list of places in Detroit that I’ve visited so far that I absolutely love!

Maru – Sushi Bar

Right on the outskirts of Campus Martius, this is a sushi spot that I really enjoy.  They have some very delicious rolls, especially their Yellow Fever roll! They serve it with this special chili sauce. Honestly, whatever roll you end up getting, ask for a side of spicy mayo and that chili sauce and you’ll have the best meal of your life, guaranteed.

Detroit 75 Kitchen – Artisan Gourmet

Food trucks are everything, am I right?! This Detroit-based food truck is located right off Exit 47A off I-75. Their food ranges from sandwiches, hot dogs, and chicken tenders. On Wednesday’s, they serve their special applewood smoked chicken (which is to die for) and on Friday’s, they serve their Fisher Fwy fish sandwich, which I still have yet to try. And every time I go, I make sure to order their BBQ chicken egg rolls and you all should too, you can’t go wrong with these appetizers.

Sy Thai – Thai

The more you guys get to know me, the more you’ll realize that I will never turn down Thai food. If you give me an option to eat at a Thai restaurant vs. any other cuisine, I will choose the Thai restaurant. Sy Thai might not be on the list of gourmet 5-star restaurants, but it is the perfect little spot in Midtown Detroit! It’s not too big, it’s not too small, their portion sizes are very generous, and is a lifesaver for any of you college kids at Wayne State! My all-time favorite dish here is the Kow Pad with halal chicken.

Dearborn Meat Market – Middle Eastern

Go here — you’ll thank me later.

Nice Modern Creamery – Nitrogen Ice Cream

Another thing that you guys will get to know about me aside from my love for Thai food, is my love for dessert. Located in the suburbs of Detroit, this cute little ice cream place has it all! Besides the fact that it’s made with liquid nitrogen and is the creamiest ice cream I’ve ever tasted, they offer a brilliant accessory for adding a syringe to your dessert. I personally get the Nutella syringe, but they have different flavors to choose from.

Dime Store – American Brunch Bar

There’s never a Sunday that goes by where I don’t think about treating myself to a cute brunch spot. If you’re looking for the perfect place, the Dime Store will be your best bet. In the middle of downtown Detroit inside the Chrysler House, this cozy breakfast jem offers the homiest breakfast options — starting with the perfect drink to start off your morning and ending with a happy tummy.

Flowers of Vietnam – Vietnamese

This place is truly a hole-in-the-wall. I personally have only tried Vietnamese food once or twice in my life, but this place seriously turned that all around. The only drawback to this place is that they are only open on weekends, but other than that, their menu is filled with flavor. I would recommend the Tom Rang Muoi — it’s muoi deliscioso 😉

Good Burger – New American

Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned burger? Detroit itself has many burger joints to choose from, but the one I always fall back on is definitely Good Burger in East Dearborn.

Mad Hatter Bistro – American Bistro, Bar & Tea Room

An Alice in Wonderland fan? This is the place for you. If you’re looking for a cute place to dress up with your girlfriends, Mad Hatter is the spot. I’ve experienced both, their dinner service and tea service alike. But I’d have to say my experience with their afternoon tea was the most fun I’ve ever had. With endless choices for tea and the most adorable display of tea snacks — you cannot go wrong here. Definitely check this place out! I must warn you that you will need to reserve a table for your party ahead of time; tables fill up quickly, especially on weekends.

Donut Bar + Coffee – Donuts & Coffee (shocker, huh?)

Ending this post with a choice that everybody loves — donuts…or coffee! This place has both! With your classic favorites of chocolate frosted and honey glazed donuts, Donut Bar takes it to the next level with choices you wouldn’t even think of! Fruity Pebble, cookies & cream, Nutella-frosted…you name it, they’ve got it. Get there as early as you can though, once they’re out, they’re out for the rest of the day, so don’t miss your chance!

As you can tell, I love to dine out with friends, so please share some of your favorite spots with me in the comments below. I hope this post helps my Detroit readers and even those visiting Detroit looking for some dining out options! Of course, there are many more great restaurants in this beautiful city, so feel free to share below and I will let you know if we end up trying some out!
